About Parque Nacional Laguna del Laja

Parque Nacional Laguna del Laja is a remarkable national park located in Chile’s Bío Bío Region established in 1958 to protect the unique landscapes and ecosystems surrounding the Laguna del Laja and the towering Antuco Volcano. The park spans a diverse geography characterized by rugged volcanic peaks, including the prominent volcanic complex of Antuco and the Nevados de Chillán massif nearby. At the heart lies the glacial lagoon — Laguna del Laja — a deep, crystal-clear lake that provides vital habitat for native fish species and waterfowl. The park’s forests are primarily composed of lenga and coihue trees, interspersed with araucarias, imparting a quintessential southern Chilean Andean feel. Visitors can explore an extensive network of trails that range from gentle nature walks along the lagoon's shore to challenging scrambles and climbs up volcanic slopes. Mountaineering on the Antuco Volcano, one of Chile’s most iconic and accessible volcanoes, is a highlight for many adventurers. The park also offers opportunities for camping, birdwatching, fishing, and in winter, snow sports like skiing in designated areas. Its relatively remote location means fewer crowds and a more intimate experience with nature. Wildlife enthusiasts enjoy spotting species such as pudú (a small deer), Andean foxes, and various birds including the Chilean flicker and austral parakeet. The park’s volcanic geothermal activity and mineral-rich waters add a geologic fascination for visitors. Parque Nacional Laguna del Laja is a treasured conservation area that balances preserving natural beauty while providing well-maintained recreational access for diverse outdoor enthusiasts.
